reBound Shibari Style Impressions – Photography by David Lawrence

reBound is among the very finest editions of Japanese rope bondage photography yet published – essential for the serious collector. Not a casual purchase, reBound is a major 368-page hardcover volume, printed on quality art paper, with over 550 images – and even a behind-the-scenes section. A culmination of a 5-year project, this is something special.

reBound is the creation of David Lawrence, a master of capturing the art of Japanese rope bondage in a parade of stylish images – mostly classic monochrome. There’s more to it than just top class rope bondage (or Shibari) imagery, though – what makes this book stand out for me is the obvious teamwork between David and the 36 women modelling for the book. It’s very clear that this is not just an experienced photographer instructing models to pose as he wishes. No, these women are very obviously throwing themselves into the project with passion and commitment. Their faces show excitement, apprehension and arousal. That’s why the project works so well. It’s the look in the women’s eyes that makes the connection.

The locations also bring a striking dimension to reBound. There are bondage sessions out in the woods (my own favourite), in deserted factories, in a Hollywood mansion, on a beach at sunrise, in an old prison and on a Manhattan rooftop, as well as domestic settings.

Not a cheap book, this is an investment for the connoisseur to treasure.

reBound is the sequel to David Lawrence’s earlier volume, Bound.
